The family later shifted to village Dh&#257rov&#257l&#299 in Shei<u>kh</u>&#363pur&#257 district where &#256tm&#257 Si&#7749gh came in contact with Bh&#257&#299 Lachhma&#7751 Si&#7749gh, an active Ak&#257l&#299 reformist, and learnt reading and writing in Gurmukh&#299 script and also received the rites of <u>Kh</u>&#257ls&#257 initiation. He married and raised a family of five children- three sons and two daughters. Bh&#257&#299 &#256tm&#257 Si&#7749gh enlisted at the outbreak of the First Great War in 1914 and served in the 32nd Punjab Battalion. On release from the army in 1918, he cultivated closer association with Bh&#257&#299 Lachhma&#7751 Si&#7749gh and started taking active interest in the Gurdw&#257r&#257 reform movement. He took part in the Dh&#257rov&#257l&#299 conference on 1-3 October 1920 and later in the liberation of Gurdw&#257r&#257 Khar&#257 Saud&#257.
